HYPERTENSION

Blood pressure higher than normal (say 120 over 80), but "normal" usually refers to a statistical average that may be meaningless for an individual. A risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke. High blood pressure can also lead to eye problems and kidney failure. There are often no symptoms, but can include flushing in the face and lightheadedness.

Diet:
High fiber, low-fat diet, fruits, vegetables, garlic, oily fish, olive oil. Cut down on salt, alcohol, anchovies, avocados, chicken liver, chocolate, fava beans, pickled herring or other pickled foods, high-fat dairy products.

Nutrients:
Magnesium, L-carnitine, selenium, fish oil, coenzyme Q 10, garlic capsules.

Herbs:
Hawthorn, mistletoe, astragalus.
