Viral disease characterized by cold sores and skin eruptions and periodical recurrence. Herpes simplex causes cold sores around the mouth and sores on the genitals and eyes; after initial infection the virus becomes dormant and recurs usually after stressful periods or when the immune system is weak. Herpes zoster causes chicken pox and SHINGLES (see entry), which occurs when the immune system is weakened and the dormant virus is activated.
