Acidophilus

Function
Lactobacillus acidophilus as is its full name, is a rod-like bacterium the principal function of which seems to be to ferment milk sugar into lactic acid. But acidophilus also helps the digestion of proteins, in a complex process that produces lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, enzymes, B vitamins, and certain antibiotic compounds that inhibit pathogenic organisms.

Uses
Acidophilus and other probiotic bacteria are useful for re-establishing the original flora of the large intestine, for fighting candidiasis, counteracting the effects of antibiotics, contraceptive pills and corticosteroids, for their antifungal properties, for reducing blood cholesterol, and for helping digestion and nutrient absorption.

Safe supplement, no reports of toxicity.
