Immune Disorders

A portent of our times
A weak immune system and the derived immune disorders are a phenomenon of our times. By contrast to our ancestors, our immune function is handicapped by our polluted environment, ever-present stress, nutrient-poor and calorie-rich foods, and nutritionally insane eating habits. Immune disorders may be divided into

  • Hypersensitivity reactions like anaphylactic shock
  • Autoimmune disorders like psoriasis and lupus erythematosus
  • Deficiency states, both congenital and acquire

The result is bronchial asthma, hemolytic anemia, serum sickness, systemic lupus, acute glomerulonephritis, contact dermatitis, Sjoegren Syndrome, scleroderma, inflammatory myopathy, AIDS, and a prevalence of allergies that further weaken our immune function.

Aging and the immune function
But the immune system is not only what controls the previous diseases; it is also behind many degenerative processes including aging. Thus, DNA damage accelerates the aging process; while longevity is correlated with the capacity to repair DNA damage. Repairing damaged DNA depends on the strength of the immune system and the histocompatibility complex, that is, a unique identity code produced by the genes of an individual. This is made up of a series of structures in cell membranes that permits the immune system to distinguish between its own cells and these of invaders. When the immune function is weak, it cannot attack the body's enemies with rigor. Some of these damage DNA that starts producing slightly different cells, which do not accord with the histocompatibility complex. When the histocompatibility complex is damaged, the identity code loses its precision. Eventually, the immune system loses its capacity to distinguish its enemies, which begin to accumulate, and instead it starts producing autoantibodies that attack its own cells, the so-called autoimmune disorders. It is known that in many people over seventy years of age, what remains of their immune system may be ten percent or less of its initial capacity and strength.

The bane of mental stress
Another condition that may gravely weaken the immune system is mental stress, such as may be derived through bereavement from the loss of a spouse or child, the loss of a job, disfiguring accidents, the bulimia-anorexia nervosa syndrome, unaccounted obesity in sensitive individuals, or some other major source of insecurity. Mental stress increases the demand for the special nutrients that protect and repair the immune system. Smoking is another condition that weakens the immune function by destroying much of vitamin C, which in our society with its preposterous eating habits is insufficient to begin with. Still another condition is obesity. The fatter the individual, the more defective the immune function, and that is independent of any anxiety, stress or insecurity obesity may cause. In short, a healthy immune system is the key to sound health and sickness-free longevity.
