Ruscus aculeatus is an evergreen shrub member of the Lily family, growing wild in the Mediterranean region. The plant contains a group of saponin glycosides known more specifically by the name of ruscogenins. These compounds possess anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive properties, reducing the fragility of capillaries, while at the same time they are the bases of important steroids in the human body.
- Gynecological conditions. Used against menstrual problems, pregnancy cramps, pregnancy varicose veins, troubles with taking estrogens, etc.
- Ophthalmological problems. Diabetic retinopathy and retinal hemorrhages.
- Proctological problems. Used against anal fissures and itching, hemorrhoids and proctitis.
- Circulatory problems. Especially against chilblains, “heavy legs,” post-thrombotic syndrome, surface veins, varices, varicose veins and venous circulatory disorders.
Other herbs that enhance the action of butcher’s broom are bilberry, centella, ginger root, ginkgo biloba and horse chestnut.
