High cholesterol has been identified as a contributary factor in heart disease. Our organism manufactures some cholesterol for its own needs, and more from the saturated (animal) fats we eat. It is important to distinguish between HDL and LDL cholesterol. HDL is the "good" cholesterol and the higher the reading the better. LDL is the "bad" cholesterol and it should be kept low. If you have persistently high total cholesterol levels, check your thyroid first to preclude hypothyroidism, and also the gallbladder and kidneys, which can also elevate measures. Ideal total cholesterol levels range from 200-230 mg/100ml (6.0-7.0 mmol per litre).
