CELIAC DISEASE

Intestinal malabsorption caused by gluten intolerance, often misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome, and characterized by nausea, diarrhea, abdominal swelling, weight loss, anemia.

Diet:
Avoid gluten foods such as bread, cookies, cakes, oats, and commercially prepared foods that contain flour, sugar and dairy products. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts and rice. Breastfeed babies if possible; avoid giving foods containing gluten for the first year of a child's life, including bread and cereal products. An allergy to milk can also be a factor in this condition.

Nutrients:
Multivitamins and minerals with A, E, and B complex, unsaturated fatty acids.

Herbs:
Papain (to break down the gluten), chamomile, slippery elm.
