Gradual deterioration of the macular area of the retina, resulting in a progressive loss of vision and eventually blindness. One of the causes may be the toxic effects of drugs, such as the anti-malarial chroloquine; the causes of age-related macular degeneration are unknown, but major risk factors may be aging, athelosclerosis, high blood pressure, smoking.
