A communicable viral disease (rubeola virus), affecting the respiratory system, the eyes and the skin with a rash over the whole body. Usually, but not exclusively, a school-age disease, it confers permanent immunity. German measles (rubella) is a milder form, but if contracted during the first four months of pregnancy, it may cause serious birth defects, such as congenital cataracts.
