PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE

A generalized name used to describe diseases of the arteries that interfere in the flow of blood to the extremities. Associated disorders are thrombophlebitis, Buergher's disease, Raynaud's disease and acrocyanosis. Risk factors are atherosclerosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, obesity; while resulting complications include severe leg cramps while walking, angina, abnormal heart rhythms, heart failure, heart attack, stroke and kidney failure.

Diet:
Balanced low-fat high-fiber diet with olive oil and plenty of fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines. Avoid animal fats and sugars.

Nutrients:
Vitamins A, B6, C, E, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, zinc.

Herbs:
Gingko biloba.
