Lame explanations There is a very large number of brain and nerve disorders, ranging from cerebral edema, to cerebrovascular disease (hypoxia, ischemia and infarction), infections such as meningitis and viral encephalitis, transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and others, known as mad cow disease in bovines), multiple sclerosis, degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, inborn metabolic disorders, toxic diseases, tumors, epilepsy, memory problems, to name but a few. A common explanation for the recent rise of these diseases is the perennial standby of our increased longevity. With an average life span of over 80 years, it seems natural that senility-related disorders should increase-or so at least runs the argument. Yet a little historical research shows this explanation to be patently false. Many ancient Greeks and Romans lived and fought with the heavy weapons and armor of the times till the age of eighty and beyond, what seems inconceivable in our society. Thus taking only some well known generals of Alexander the Great, Antigonus Cyclope was killed fighting in the Battle of Ipsus when he was 81. Lysimachus was killed at the Battle of Corupedium when he was 80. Seleucus Nikator was assassinated as he was preparing a military expedition at 78. The Greek and Bulgarian centenarians whom Elie Metchnikoff met on the mountains of these countries at the end of the 19th century, put in a good day's work every day of the week. The widespread senility and the accompanying disorders of our society are relatively youthful: in fact, barely a few scores of years old. The cause of new diseases Our current foods bear hardly any resemblance to the foods of our ancestors nutritionally speaking. Some are loaded with fats, sugar and over 5500 additives, others are deprived of elementary nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, to the extent that food, from a source of health is fast becoming a cause of illness. This has adversely affected our organic functions and especially our immune system. Finally, the ease with which we indulge in prescription or over-the-counter drugs, with the earlier encouragement of the large majority of health professionals in order to alleviate a variety of symptoms, has further weakened our immune system aside from saddling us with a vast array of harmful side effects.
