Glycine

Sources
Glycine is another non-essential amino acid manufactured by the body, but its utilization in at least six important metabolic pathways makes substantial demands on it. Glycine is involved in the synthesis of glutathione, nucleic-acid bases, creatine for muscle function, heme for oxygen transport via hemoglobin, bile acids, and methyl group metabolism.

Uses

  • Acts as a sedative for the brain and central nervous system
  • Agent against insomnia and nervous tension
  • Can regulate excessive stomach acidity
  • Good for treatment of seasonal depression
  • Helps to keep the prostate healthy
  • Important agent for the synthesis of collagen and repair of connective tissue, such as of the cardiovascular system, joints, skin, etc.
  • Improves the secretion of growth hormone
  • Possesses anti-spasmodic properties
  • Retards muscle degeneration by supplying extra creatine

Interactions
Excessive amounts of glycine can displace glucose in the metabolic chain and cause listlessness and fatigue.

Safety
