Sources
Ornithine is another non-essential amino acid manufactured by the body. Ornithine and arginine are transformed into each other in our bodies, and for this reason appear to have similar properties. It is believed that ornithine is twice as effective as arginine, and ornithine enters the mitochondria while arginine does not appear to do so.
Uses
- Improves the process of wound healing and the activity of T-cells
- Increases release of growth hormone but at very high dosages
- Protects the thymus gland
- Reduces ammonia in the liver
Interactions
Remembering the mutual transformation of ornithine and arginine, persons prone to cold or canker sores should avoid taking ornithine.
Safety
This amino acid should not be taken by persons with active herpes or schizophrenia.
