VITAMIN B5 or PANTOTHENIC ACID

Functions
Pantothenic acid is another water-soluble vitamin of the B complex. It functions as coenzyme A in the control of fat metabolism, the detoxification of drugs, the formation of antibodies, and the production of energy and anti-stress hormones. It is basic for the formation of acetylcholine, a compound involved in memory and probably in other brain functions.

Sources
Food sources of pantothenic acid are dry brewer's yeast, yeast extract, nuts, wheat bran, soya flour, eggs, poultry, meats, whole grains and pulses. But food processing results in large losses; i.e. 80% in canned legumes, 70% in frozen meats, over 50% in refined grains, 35% in dairy products.

Uses

  • Allergic skin reactions
  • Decrease of mucous secretions in respiratory allergies
  • Paralytic ileus, usually a temporary paralysis of the intestine
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Stress and anxiety deficiency
  • Abdominal pains
  • Aching, burning or throbbing feet
  • Depression and psychoses
  • Fatigue, headache, indigestion and insomnia
  • Loss of appetite
  • Respiratory infections

Safety
Generally considered a safe vitamin. High doses may cause occasional diarrhea or water retention, but these disappear when the overdoses are normalized. Pantothenic acid deficiency, however, may cause still and premature births, malformed and mentally retarded children.
